| Welcome
to this series of tutorials concerning ecg 's reading
Basics definitions:
ECG: - an electrocardiogram is a recordering of
the heart 's electrical activity - it is generally recorded
on a graph paper
ELECTROCARDIOGRAPH: - it is
the machine that records the electrocardiogram
THE FIRST ELECTROCARDIOGRAM: -
was recorded in 1895 by Whilem Einthoven, a Dutch physiologist -
Whilem Einthoven received the Noble Price in Physiologie and Medicine
in 1924 for his works on ECG - the ECG was then improved by Wilson
(1938) and Emmanuel Goldberger (1942) who determined the ecg as
it is used today
ELECTRODES AND LEADS - during
its activity, the heart produces an electric field - the ECG
records this electric field and its variations - an Electric
Field is always recorded between 2 electrodes - the ECG uses
2 kinds of electrodes: -
bipolar electrodes: a classical pair of electrodes -
unipolar electrodes: only one electrode is present, the second is
a neutral electrode
that doesn't appear - a pair of electrodes that records the electrical
activity of the heart with a determined polarised direction is called
a lead. A lead is represented by a vector.
